Forensic Science Workshops

A crime has been committed and it is the responsibility of each class or group to work together on a different aspect of the crime scene, culminating in an end of investigation assembly piecing together each group's conclusions. Our forensic science workshop uses scientific techniques that are suitable for all school age children.

Suitable as both a single and multiday workshop, sessions may include:

The Crime Scene

Each scene must firstly be taped off in order to protect any evidence that may be found. Clues and evidence must be identified and preserved by taking photographs, sketching the scene, measuring distances and collecting samples.

Finger Print Examination

Finger prints are a very common form of physical evidence left at a crime scene. Our young investigators will identify characteristics in their own prints before trying to establish the identity of the prints left at the crime scene.

Identification of Hairs & Fibres

Hair and fibre indentification can link suspects to crimes and even indicate the route or entrance a criminal may have used. Hopefully our crime scene investigators have carefully preserved this evidence for our fibre analysis team....

Forensic Anthropology

Forensic anthropology is the study of bones. It is possible to discover the sex, age and race of a person as well as how tall they were and if they suffered from ill health or injury. Groups will also learn about bone names and their positions in the overall skeleton.

Identification of Impressions

Shoe prints, tyre marks and other impressions may have been carelessly left at the crime scene. It will be important for our impressions team to list both class and individual characteristics of impressions discovered.

Other sessions include blood identification, forensic entomology and handwriting analysis with different sessions suited to various age groups.

Our younger investigators are always reassured that the story is make believe. Reception, Y1 & Y2 classes are usually split into smaller groups rotating around several interactive investigation tables.
